GMC Hummer EV 3X Towing Range

How far can you tow with the GMC Hummer EV 3X truck?

One of the most common questions that comes up when people are considering buying an electric truck is how far they can tow with it. This is especially important for people who want to use their truck for outdoor activities like camping, boating, or hauling gear.

In a recent video, Branden Bodendorfer of Destination EV Travel towed a 5000-pound trailer with a 2023 Hummer EV 3X truck for nearly 100 miles on interstate, county roads, and city streets. He found that the truck’s range was reduced by about 40% when towing, but it was still able to travel a significant distance.

This is good news for people who are considering using an electric truck for towing. It shows that EV trucks are capable of handling heavy loads over long distances, even though their range may be reduced.

Here are some tips for maximizing your towing range with an electric truck:

  • Choose the right truck for your needs. Not all electric trucks have the same towing capacity. Make sure to choose a truck that is rated to tow the weight you need.
  • Don’t overload your truck. Overloading your truck will reduce its range and performance.
  • Drive at moderate speeds. Towing at high speeds will use more energy and reduce your range.
  • Use regenerative braking. Regenerative braking converts the energy of your truck’s momentum into electricity, which can be used to recharge the battery.
  • Plan your route. If you’re going to be towing a long distance, make sure to plan your route so that you have access to charging stations.

How Far Can you Tow with the GMC Hummer 3X?

In our test we traveled nearly 100 miles towing 5000lbs. Our payload included a car trailer hauling a 2019 Chevy Equinox. We traveled through city streets, County and State Highways as well as through Interstate traffic at various speeds.

Traditionally, we have thought of fuel economy in terms of miles per gallon, mpg. With Electric vehicles we still measure miles, but in this case we measure miles traveled per Kilowatt Hour.

The GMC Hummer EV is believed to have a 212kWh battery for driving. In our test we experienced different measurements of range based on the speed we were traveling.

When we were traveling at interstate speeds of 65 MPH, we were getting about .9 miles per kWh. Based on the battery size of 212 kWh, we expect that we would have a total range of 190 miles with a full charge.

When we were traveling on County and State Highways at speeds of 55 MPH, we were getting an about 1.1 miles per kWh. Based on the battery size, we expect based off of this range test we would have a range of 233 miles on a full charge.

It’s important to know that weather condition, total payload, driving style, and terrain are going to affect your overall range.

Whenever traveling with an EV you should plan your route so that you can charge your vehicle between 8 to 20% to maximize your total available traveling distance between stops.

Wheelers Family Auto Group has made every effort to build out and support EV traveling in Wisconsin. They have fast chargers now located in Coloma, Wisconsin along Hwy 51, In Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids just off Hwy 13 and Hwy 10. And for those traveling to the Northwoods via Hwy 13, you can find a 48 kWh charger in Medford, Wisconsin.
