Hiking Wildcat Mound in Clark County, Wisconsin
Hiking Wildcat Mound in Clark County, Wisconsin
Tucked away in Clark County, Wisconsin, Wildcat Mound offers hikers a chance to explore rugged trails, dramatic rock formations, and panoramic views—alongside a glimpse into Wisconsin’s glacial past. This lesser-known hiking spot is a true gem for those looking to experience the raw, untouched beauty of central Wisconsin.
Our Experience at Wildcat Mound
My family and I explored Wildcat Mound in May, and the experience left such an impression that we’re already planning a return trip in the fall to catch the vibrant autumn colors. The hike centers around a scenic loop that circles a few impressive rock formations perched along a ridge. While the initial trail—including a set of stairs—is maintained, the path becomes noticeably more rustic beyond that point. It’s all part of the adventure.
At the base of the stairs, you’ll find a small campground and outhouse-style restrooms, which are convenient for day-trippers and overnight visitors alike.
What Makes Wildcat Mound Special
The views from the top of the ridge are stunning. On a clear day, you can even see what’s believed to be the Ice Age Drift Line, a visible reminder of the glaciers that once shaped this region.
This hike isn’t just a nature walk—it’s a geological and visual journey that highlights the terrain’s ancient history and raw beauty.
Photographer’s Notes
On this trip, I tested out the newly released Sony 50–150mm f/2 lens, and it performed beautifully in the varying light conditions of the forest and ridge. It’s a versatile lens that worked well for detail shots and medium landscapes. However, if you’re focused on capturing sweeping vistas, I’d recommend bringing along a wide-angle lens as well.
Trail Conditions and Tips
A word of caution: these trails are not ideal for young children or those who are not physically fit. Much of the path closely hugs the ridge, offering spectacular views but little room for error. It’s essential to wear proper footwear—tennis shoes or hiking boots are a must. Skip the open-toe sandals or slip-ons; this terrain demands traction and support.
