Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm is the realization of a dream held by co-founder Martine Anderson, a native of France. Having nurtured a vision of owning a sprawling, fragrant lavender garden akin to those of Provence, Martine’s aspirations led her to Washington Island with her husband Edgar upon retiring. However, their search for a fitting business venture yielded no success. Edgar, inspired by Martine’s belief that the island resembled Provence, conducted in-depth weather studies, gathered soil samples, and cultivated a test garden, joined by friends Gene and Helene Meyer. This endeavor not only saw the blossoming of gardens but also the deepening of friendships and the birth of a lavender enterprise.
Though an unfortunate accident claimed Gene’s life, Martine, Edgar, and Helene pressed on with the knowledge that he would have ardently supported the venture. Business plans took shape in 2012, and plant and product orders were placed, laying the foundation for the establishment of Fragrant Isle’s retail store in early 2013. Nearly 9,000 lavender plants graced four fields that May, marking the beginning of a journey that was met with heartwarming acceptance from the island community and patrons.
Recognizing the need for expanded space, the team acquired a 21.7-acre parcel in autumn 2013. Today, this location houses their new retail store, set amidst a field destined to host over 30,000 lavender plants, a demonstration garden, a gazebo, and outdoor seating for a café.
