Phelps purchased the land that would become McGregor&period; Phelps recognized the potential for the area to become a major transportation hub due to its proximity to the Mississippi River&comma; and he began to develop the town&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>In 1845&comma; the town was officially named McGregor&comma; after Alexander McGregor&comma; a prominent businessman who owned a sawmill and a ferry in the area&period; The town grew rapidly&comma; thanks to the river trade&comma;
