The Hike to the Tower
The highlight of the park is the trail leading to the observation tower. The hike is short, less than half a mile each way, and in autumn it’s lined with maples and birches glowing in shades of yellow, orange, and red. The path is well-maintained and easy enough for most fitness levels, though we took our time to stop and look up at the canopy along the way.
The wooden tower stands at the end of the trail, rising just above the treetops. Climbing it is straightforward (a few flights of stairs), and once you’re at the top, you can see the surrounding forests and small lakes spreading out in every direction, one of the best vantage points for fall color in Price County.
Views from the Top
From above, the landscape looks especially pretty in fall. The mix of colors makes the forest feel alive, with bright leaves broken up by pockets of deep green pines and the shine of water below. It’s not a jaw-dropping view on the scale of a mountain summit, but it’s peaceful and definitely worth pausing to take in.
When to Visit for Peak Fall Color
Northern Wisconsin’s color typically peaks in late September through the first two weeks of October, a week or two ahead of the southern part of the state. Check the Wisconsin DNR’s fall color report before you go, since timing shifts year to year with weather.
Crowds and Timing
Weekends draw a lot of visitors, and the parking lot can fill quickly during peak color weekends. When we went, the trail was already busy, and there was a line of people waiting to climb the tower. If you’re able, plan a weekday visit or arrive early in the morning. You’ll likely find it quieter and easier to enjoy the view.
Good to Know Before You Go
Timm’s Hill County Park is open to the public and there’s a small day-use parking area at the trailhead. The park also connects to the Ice Age Trail and has trails for skiing and snowshoeing in winter, so it’s a worthwhile stop in other seasons too. For our fall visit, the simple loop to the tower was enough: it doesn’t take long, but the combination of forest trail and elevated view made it a memorable stop on our fall color drive.
Timm’s Hill might not feel like a major destination, but it’s a pleasant, low-effort stop, especially when the leaves are changing. The short hike and tower climb don’t demand much time or gear, and the payoff is a wide view of northern Wisconsin’s forests.
